Vitex trifolia is a coastal shrub widely used in Thai traditional medicine. Its distinctive trifoliate leaves and soft, aromatic foliage make it easy to recognize and popular in herbal gardens.
Botanical Characteristics
Woody shrub 2–5 m tall. Leaves opposite and typically trifoliate; the central leaflet is longer, leaf undersides slightly paler. Small lilac to purple flowers appear in terminal clusters, followed by round black fruits.
Traditional Medicinal Uses
Leaves are used as a cooling, anti-inflammatory herb for headaches, fever, and skin irritation. Often included in herbal compresses for muscle aches and in steam inhalations.
Cultivation Notes
Thrives in full sun, heat, and saline winds. Prefers well-drained soil; prune after flowering to keep compact. Propagate from semi-hardwood cuttings.
