Thespesia populnea, commonly known as the Portia Tree or Indian Tulip Tree, is a coastal evergreen species native to tropical regions, including southern Thailand. It is well adapted to sandy soils and saline conditions and has long been recognized in traditional medicine for its therapeutic uses.
Botanical Characteristics
This small to medium-sized tree reaches 6–10 meters in height. It has broad, glossy, heart-shaped leaves with prominent veins and smooth margins. The bark is grayish-brown and fibrous, while its yellow hibiscus-like flowers develop into round, woody fruit capsules.
Traditional Medicinal Uses
In Thai traditional medicine, the bark, leaves, and flowers of ปอทะเล are used for their anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties. Poultices made from crushed leaves are applied to swellings and skin irritations. The bark extract is used to treat fever, coughs, and stomach discomfort. The plant also appears in Ayurvedic and Polynesian herbal systems as a remedy for skin and liver conditions.

Thespesia populnea is valued as a coastal protector tree, preventing erosion and stabilizing soil along beaches. It is commonly planted near temples and seaside homes as a symbol of resilience and harmony with nature. The wood is dense and used in carving and small crafts.
