Syzygium malaccense, known in Thailand as ชมพู่มะลิ (Chomphu Mali), is a tropical fruit tree prized for its glossy leaves, fragrant pink flowers, and crisp, refreshing fruit. It is cultivated across Southeast Asia both as a food source and a cooling medicinal plant.
Botanical Characteristics
This medium-sized evergreen tree grows 10–15 meters tall, with smooth grey bark and opposite, leathery leaves. The new shoots are reddish-pink, turning glossy green as they mature. The striking pink to crimson flowers bloom in clusters directly on the branches, followed by pear-shaped fruits with a mild, watery sweetness.
Use in Thai Traditional Medicine
The fruit and leaves are used to reduce body heat, quench thirst, and refresh the system. Leaf infusions are traditionally taken to relieve fever and promote digestion. The bark is occasionally used in decoctions for sore throats and inflammation.
Medicinal Compounds
Rich in vitamin C, flavonoids, and tannins, Syzygium malaccense has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and mild antibacterial properties. It supports immune function, aids digestion, and helps maintain skin hydration in tropical climates.
