035 Ruellia tuberosa – Minnieroot

ต้อยติ่ง (Toi Ting)

Family: Acanthaceae

Ruellia tuberosa, known in Thai as ต้อยติ่ง (Toi Ting) and commonly called Minnieroot or Cracker Plant, is a hardy perennial herb native to tropical America and naturalized across Thailand. It is easily recognized by its violet-blue funnel-shaped flowers and is both ornamental and medicinal. In Thai traditional medicine, it is appreciated for its cooling and detoxifying effects on the urinary and circulatory systems.

Botanical Characteristics

This small herb grows 30–60 cm tall, with opposite, glossy green leaves and distinctive purple flowers that bloom in the morning and close by afternoon. The plant produces slender pods that burst open when mature, dispersing seeds — a trait that gives it the nickname “Cracker Plant.” The roots are tuberous, giving rise to its Latin name, tuberosa.

Use in Thai Traditional Medicine

ต้อยติ่ง is used to reduce fever, clear toxins, and support urinary function. Decoctions of the roots and leaves are taken for kidney and bladder ailments, and the herb is sometimes used as a supportive treatment for diabetes and gout. It is considered cooling, promoting detoxification through gentle diuretic action.

Preparation & Application

The fresh or dried roots are boiled (about 10–15 g in 500 ml water) and consumed as a herbal drink. The leaves may also be pounded and applied externally for inflammation or skin irritation.

Cultivation Notes

Ruellia tuberosa grows easily in full sun or partial shade, tolerating both dry and moist conditions. It is well suited to container planting and naturalized garden borders. In the KBE Thai Medicinal Herb Garden, it serves as a representative of Thailand’s accessible “household medicine” plants — simple, effective, and enduring.

Historical Context

This plant is commonly found in temple gardens and village medicine beds across Thailand. Its resilience and usefulness make it a symbol of endurance and humble strength in Thai folk tradition.
