มะยม (Ma Yom)
Family: Phyllanthaceae
Phyllanthus acidus, known in Thai as มะยม (Ma Yom), or Star Gooseberry, is a small tropical tree found in most Thai village gardens. It is easily recognized by its bright green leaves and clusters of pale yellow, star-shaped fruits. The tree holds an important place in Thai culture and traditional medicine, symbolizing popularity, coolness, and purity.
Botanical Characteristics
The tree grows 2–9 meters tall, with compound leaves and light bark. The fruits are translucent, star-like berries with a tart flavor. The plant thrives in full sunlight and well-drained soil and produces fruit throughout the year in tropical climates.
Use in Thai Traditional Medicine
In traditional Thai medicine, both the fruit and leaves of มะยม are used for their cooling, detoxifying, and digestive properties. Decoctions from the leaves are believed to balance body heat, while the fruit is used to stimulate appetite and reduce internal inflammation. The bark and roots have also been used in mild cleansing tonics.
Cultural and Therapeutic Significance
Beyond its medicinal value, มะยม carries cultural symbolism. Thai people traditionally plant the Star Gooseberry near the front of the house, as “ยืนยม” (to stand with Ma Yom) sounds like “to be admired.” It is believed to bring popularity and positive social energy to the household. Its sour fruit represents humility — a reminder that good fortune should be balanced with modesty.
Cultivation Notes
Phyllanthus acidus grows easily from seed or cutting. It prefers full sun and moderate watering and is remarkably resilient in coastal environments. At Kamala Beach Estate, its presence reflects both the ecological and symbolic richness of the Thai landscape.
