เพกา (Phega) / Indian Trumpet Tree

Family: Bignoniaceae

Oroxylum indicum, known in Thai as เพกา (Phega), is a deciduous tree widely used in Thai traditional medicine. Its young pods and seeds are also eaten as a bitter vegetable, valued for their detoxifying and digestive benefits.

Botanical Characteristics

This fast-growing tree reaches 10–12 meters in height with large, pinnate leaves and thick, fleshy stems. The flowers are large, reddish-purple, and trumpet-shaped, blooming at night and pollinated by bats. The long, flat pods—often exceeding 60 cm—contain numerous winged seeds.

Use in Thai Traditional Medicine

The bark, seeds, and pods are used to reduce fever, cleanse the blood, and relieve digestive discomfort. Decoctions of the bark are used to treat diarrhea and respiratory inflammation, while the roasted pods are consumed as a mild laxative and liver tonic.

Medicinal Compounds

Contains flavonoids (oroxylin, baicalein), alkaloids, and tannins known for anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and hepatoprotective properties. These compounds support liver detoxification and improve metabolism.

Culinary and Cultural Uses

The young pods, known for their characteristic bitterness, are grilled or boiled and served with chili paste. They are believed to purify the blood and aid digestion. The plant holds symbolic significance in traditional Thai rural medicine as a “cleansing tree.”

Cultivation Notes

Oroxylum indicum prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil and full sunlight. It grows well in tropical climates and tolerates seasonal dryness. The tree regenerates easily from seed and benefits from pruning during early growth stages to promote strong form.
