แก้ว (Kaew) / Orange Jasmine

Family: Rutaceae

Murraya paniculata, known in Thai as แก้ว (Kaew), is a small evergreen shrub or tree prized for its glossy leaves and clusters of highly fragrant white flowers. It is one of Thailand’s most beloved ornamental and medicinal plants, used both in gardens and traditional healing.

Botanical Characteristics

This dense, bushy shrub typically grows 2–5 meters tall. Leaves are glossy, dark green, and arranged alternately, with an oval shape and smooth margins. The plant produces small, star-shaped white flowers with an intense citrus fragrance, followed by small red berries that attract birds.

Traditional Medicinal Uses

In Thai traditional medicine, แก้ว is used for its cooling and anti-inflammatory properties. Extracts from the leaves and bark are believed to relieve headaches, treat mild fever, and support respiratory health. The essential oils provide a calming, aromatic effect used in both herbal baths and massage infusions.

Aromatic and Cultural Value

Orange Jasmine is often planted near homes and temples for its enduring fragrance, symbolizing purity and protection. Its flowers are sometimes added to herbal sachets and hair oils. In Thai folk belief, the Kaew tree is also thought to bring good fortune.

Cultivation Notes

This species thrives in tropical climates with full sun to partial shade. It prefers well-drained soil and moderate watering. Pruning after flowering encourages compact, lush growth and continual blooming throughout the year.
