ช้าพลู (Cha Phlu) / Indian Rhododendron
Family: Melastomataceae
Melastoma malabathricum, known in Thai as ช้าพลู (Cha Phlu), is a small evergreen shrub recognized by its soft, hairy leaves and beautiful purple-pink flowers. It grows naturally in tropical and subtropical regions and is widely used in traditional Thai and Southeast Asian herbal medicine for wound healing and anti-inflammatory treatments.
Botanical Characteristics
The shrub reaches 1–3 meters in height and features ovate leaves with three to five prominent longitudinal veins. The leaves and stems are covered with fine hairs. Its flowers, when mature, have five broad petals and produce small purple-black edible fruits. The plant thrives in moist, sunny areas and regenerates well after pruning.
Use in Thai Traditional Medicine
The leaves and roots of ช้าพลู are used for treating wounds, ulcers, and skin infections. Crushed fresh leaves are applied directly to cuts to stop bleeding and accelerate healing. Decoctions made from the leaves help alleviate diarrhea and ease inflammation of the stomach and intestines.
Medicinal Compounds
Contains flavonoids, tannins, and triterpenoids that contribute to its antimicrobial, antioxidant, and wound-healing properties. These compounds support tissue repair and reduce oxidative stress.
Culinary and Cultural Uses
While primarily medicinal, the fruits of Melastoma malabathricum are occasionally eaten raw or used as natural dyes. In Thai rural communities, the plant is also grown ornamentally for its vivid flowers.
Cultivation Notes
Melastoma malabathricum grows best in moist, well-drained soil with full to partial sunlight. It is a hardy shrub that requires minimal maintenance and responds well to trimming, which encourages dense, healthy growth.
