031 Kaempferia galanga – Aromatic Sand Ginger

เปราะหอม (Pro Hom)

Family: Zingiberaceae

Kaempferia galanga, known in Thai as เปราะหอม (Pro Hom) and commonly called Aromatic Sand Ginger, is a perennial herb native to Southeast Asia. It is distinguished by its broad, lanceolate leaves and strong, pleasant fragrance released from its rhizomes. In Thai traditional medicine, it is classified as a warming herb used to promote circulation, ease respiratory discomfort, and strengthen overall vitality.

Botanical Characteristics

This small herb grows 20–40 cm tall and spreads through underground rhizomes. The leaves emerge directly from the base, forming a rosette, often with white or cream variegation along the edges. Small white flowers with a purple throat appear briefly from the center of the plant. It prefers moist, shaded environments and humus-rich soil, thriving in tropical garden beds or pots.

Use in Thai Traditional Medicine

เปราะหอม is used in Thai herbal medicine to relieve dizziness, nasal congestion, and fatigue. The rhizomes are crushed or boiled to release essential oils, often included in herbal steam baths and inhalations. Decoctions are taken for indigestion, poor appetite, and mild stomach discomfort. In external applications, the herb is a core ingredient in traditional Thai massage oils and compress balls used to stimulate energy flow and relax muscles.

Aroma & Energy Profile

Energetically warming and aromatic. Its scent is believed to open the sinuses, awaken the senses, and balance wind element disturbances (lom) in Thai medicine.

Cultivation Notes

Kaempferia galanga grows best in partial shade with consistent moisture. The rhizomes should be harvested after the foliage begins to yellow. Dividing the rhizomes every one to two years encourages healthy regrowth. In the KBE Thai Medicinal Herb Garden, it represents the integration of aroma therapy, energy medicine, and botanical healing in Thai tradition.

Historical Context

Used for centuries in both culinary and medicinal contexts, เปราะหอม has held a prominent role in Thai wellness rituals. Its essential oil is still distilled for traditional balms, while in ancient times, monks used the crushed rhizome for meditation inhalations to promote clarity and calm awareness.
