Citrus hystrix ‘Variegata’, commonly known as Variegated Kaffir Lime, is a visually striking form of the traditional Thai มะกรูด. Its distinctive cream-and-green marbled leaves combine the plant’s signature fragrance with decorative appeal, making it popular in both medicinal gardens and home landscapes.
Botanical Characteristics
This small, evergreen tree grows up to 3 meters tall. The leaves are double-lobed, glossy, and feature creamy-white variegation along the edges and midrib. The fruit, when produced, is bumpy and aromatic, though less abundant than the standard green variety. The plant thrives in warm, tropical climates with full sunlight and well-drained soil.
Traditional Medicinal Uses
Like the common Kaffir lime, มะกรูดด่าง is rich in essential oils that are valued in Thai traditional medicine. The leaves and peel are used for cleansing the scalp, repelling insects, and relieving respiratory discomfort. The fruit’s juice and rind are also used for skin care and digestive tonics.
Aromatic and Culinary Use
The fragrant leaves are a core ingredient in Thai cooking, used in soups such as Tom Yum and curries for their fresh, citrus aroma. Despite its decorative color, the variegated variety maintains the same essential oil profile as the original species.

This cultivar prefers sunny, sheltered locations and regular watering, but should not be left in standing water. It grows best in slightly acidic soil and benefits from pruning to maintain shape. While ornamental, it retains all the functional qualities of its green-leaved counterpart.
