เพชรสังฆาต (Phet Sangkat) – Veldt Grape
Family: Vitaceae
Cissus quadrangularis, known in Thai as เพชรสังฆาต (Phet Sangkat), is a perennial climbing vine recognized for its distinctive four-angled stems. It is one of the most respected herbs in traditional Thai medicine for supporting bone healing and joint strength, often called the “herbal cast.”
Botanical Characteristics
The plant has thick, green, quadrangular stems with internodes separated by constricted joints. The leaves are simple, small, and lobed, emerging from the angles of the stem. Tiny white to yellowish flowers appear in clusters, followed by small black or purple berries. The plant propagates easily through stem cuttings and thrives in tropical conditions.
Use in Thai Traditional Medicine
เพชรสังฆาต (Phet Sangkat) is widely used to promote bone repair after fractures or injuries. The stems are often ground or boiled to prepare an herbal extract that supports calcium absorption and accelerates healing. It also reduces swelling, relieves joint pain, and strengthens connective tissue. In Ayurvedic and Thai practice, it is prescribed for hemorrhoids, osteoporosis, and general vitality.
Cultivation Notes
Cissus quadrangularis prefers full sunlight and well-drained soil. It grows rapidly with minimal care and can be trained to climb supports or spread along the ground. Regular pruning encourages new growth and prevents woody hardening of the stems. It is drought-tolerant once established.
Historical Context
References to Cissus quadrangularis date back to ancient Indian and Southeast Asian medical texts, where it was called “Asthisamharaka,” meaning “bone protector.” Thai healers incorporated it into herbal formulas for physical recovery and energy restoration. Today, it remains a key herb in both traditional and modern phytotherapy for musculoskeletal health.
