มะยม (Mayom) / Otaheite Gooseberry

Family: Phyllanthaceae

Phyllanthus acidus, known in Thailand as มะยม (Mayom), is a small deciduous tree grown throughout Southeast Asia. It bears pale yellow, ribbed fruits that are sour and refreshing, widely used in both traditional Thai medicine and local cuisine.

Botanical Characteristics

The tree reaches about 5–10 meters in height with a dense crown of pinnate leaves. Tiny flowers appear along slender branches, followed by clusters of translucent yellow fruits. The fruits are crisp and tart, often eaten with chili salt or used for pickling.

Use in Thai Traditional Medicine

Mayom fruit is known for its cleansing and cooling effects. It is used to purify the blood, reduce fever, and support digestion. In Thai traditional medicine, it is also believed to help lower cholesterol and detoxify the liver. The leaves are occasionally used in poultices for skin inflammation.

Medicinal Compounds

The fruit contains high levels of vitamin C, flavonoids, and organic acids that act as antioxidants and natural diuretics. It also contains saponins and tannins that support metabolic balance and aid in detoxification.

Cultural Significance

In Thai folklore, planting a มะยม tree near the house is believed to bring popularity and good fortune, as the word “ยม” (Yom) also means “admired.” It is a common feature in temple gardens and traditional village homes.

Cultivation Notes

Phyllanthus acidus thrives in tropical climates with good sunlight and well-drained soil. It grows easily from seeds and can also be propagated through cuttings. The tree tolerates seasonal drought but benefits from regular watering during fruiting season.
