Orthosiphon aristatus, known in Thai as พญายอ (Phaya Yo), is a striking perennial herb recognized by its delicate white flower spikes resembling cat’s whiskers. In Thai and Southeast Asian medicine, it is revered for supporting kidney function and reducing inflammation.
Botanical Characteristics
The plant grows 30–80 cm tall with square stems and bright green, serrated leaves arranged oppositely. The flowers bloom in tall, slender clusters, white to pale purple, with long, projecting stamens that resemble whiskers. It thrives in humid, tropical environments with partial sun.
Use in Thai Traditional Medicine
พญายอ is used as a diuretic to promote urination, cleanse the kidneys, and reduce swelling. Herbal infusions made from the leaves help treat urinary tract infections, gout, and kidney stones. It is also used to relieve joint pain, lower uric acid, and support detoxification after fever or illness.
Medicinal Compounds
Contains rosmarinic acid, sinensetin, and orthosiphols—compounds with diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. These active ingredients promote kidney filtration and protect against oxidative stress.
Culinary and Nutritional Uses
While primarily medicinal, พญายอ leaves are sometimes brewed into a mild herbal tea known as “Java tea.” It has a refreshing taste and gentle cleansing effect, making it popular as a daily health beverage in Thailand.
Cultivation Notes
Orthosiphon aristatus prefers moist, well-drained soil and partial sunlight. It can be propagated easily from cuttings and benefits from regular pruning to encourage branching and flowering. Frequent watering ensures healthy, aromatic leaf growth.
