Citrus aurantiifolia, commonly known as Key Lime or มะนาว (Manao), is one of Thailand’s most popular citrus plants. Its fruit and leaves are prized in Thai cuisine and traditional herbal medicine for their refreshing, detoxifying, and immune-supporting properties.
Botanical Characteristics
The tree grows 2–4 meters tall with thorny branches and smooth, glossy leaves. The small green fruits are aromatic, juicy, and acidic, turning slightly yellow when mature. The flowers are white and fragrant, blooming year-round in tropical conditions.
Use in Thai Traditional Medicine
In Thai herbal medicine, มะนาว is regarded as a cooling and cleansing fruit. The juice is used to reduce fever, soothe sore throats, and stimulate digestion. Externally, it is applied to the skin to remove excess oil, lighten dark spots, and disinfect wounds.
