พุดตาน (Phut Tan)
Family: Lamiaceae
Clerodendrum philippinum, known in Thai as พุดตาน (Phut Tan) and commonly as Hill Glory Bower or Honolulu Rose, is a perennial shrub celebrated for its lush foliage and clusters of double white to pale pink flowers. Beyond its ornamental beauty, it has a long history in Thai traditional medicine as a cooling and detoxifying herb.
Botanical Characteristics
This shrub grows 1–3 meters tall, with large, heart-shaped leaves that have a rough surface and emit a faint aroma when crushed. Its flowers form dense, round clusters and carry a sweet fragrance reminiscent of jasmine. The plant prefers moist, well-drained soil and partial sunlight.
Use in Thai Traditional Medicine
พุดตาน is regarded as a cooling plant (ยาเย็น) in Thai herbal classification. It is traditionally used to treat fever, inflammation, and skin irritation. The leaves are sometimes applied as poultices for minor wounds or rashes, while the flowers are used in bathing water or herbal steam for relaxation and purification.
Preparation & Application
Leaves can be boiled to make a mild herbal wash or compress for skin care. The flowers, rich in natural fragrance, are also infused in water for use in ceremonial bathing or as a natural perfume in traditional wellness practices.
Cultural & Aesthetic Value
Because of its elegant form and scent, Phut Tan is a favorite plant in temple and home gardens across Thailand. The flower symbolizes purity and renewal — qualities linked to both body and spirit cleansing.
Cultivation Notes
Clerodendrum philippinum thrives in humid, tropical climates and spreads readily through root suckers. Regular pruning encourages compact growth and flowering. It is best planted in bright but filtered sunlight and kept moist but not waterlogged.
Historical Context
The species has been cultivated in Asia for centuries, known in Chinese herbals and later introduced to Hawaii and other Pacific islands for its ornamental and aromatic value. In Thai gardens, it connects traditional medicine, beauty, and mindfulness.
