037 Gardenia jasminoides – Cape Jasmine

พุดซ้อน (Phut Son)

Family: Rubiaceae

Gardenia jasminoides, known in Thai as พุดซ้อน (Phut Son) and commonly called Cape Jasmine, is a small evergreen shrub native to East Asia and naturalized throughout Thailand. It is treasured for its fragrant white flowers and glossy leaves. In Thai traditional medicine, both the flowers and fruit are used for their cooling, anti-inflammatory, and sedative effects.

Botanical Characteristics

This shrub grows 1–2 meters tall, with opposite, glossy, dark green leaves and large, double white flowers that release a sweet fragrance, especially at night. The fruit is ovoid and orange-yellow when ripe, containing the pigment gardenin, used in traditional medicine and dyeing.

Use in Thai Traditional Medicine

พุดซ้อน is considered a cooling herb. The dried fruit (Phut Son Lon) is used to reduce fever, detoxify the body, and soothe internal heat. The flowers are used in calming teas to alleviate restlessness, while poultices made from the leaves may be applied to minor wounds or inflamed skin.

Aroma & Energy Profile

The fragrance is harmonizing and tranquil, said to calm the heart and mind. In traditional Thai and Chinese herbal theory, it balances excessive “fire” energy — both physical (fever, inflammation) and emotional (irritability, insomnia).

Cultivation Notes

Gardenia jasminoides prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil and partial shade. It thrives in warm, humid climates and benefits from organic mulch and regular pruning. In the KBE Thai Medicinal Herb Garden, it represents the integration of beauty, fragrance, and healing.

Historical Context

The plant’s use spans centuries in both Thai and Chinese traditional medicine. In temple gardens, Phut Son is associated with purity, serenity, and auspicious blessings, often planted near meditation spaces for its calming scent.
